i have made one of these birds for each of the victims of the el paso and dayton shootings, each bird has one bullet inside it...once it is fired in a kiln, it makes a little rattle, and the beaks, wings, and tail of these are glazed a matte blue...the big idea behind this work is to both honor the dead and to reclaim innocence in some way...i am very aware that all of those families are currently grieving, and i know there will be more shootings...but as an artist i feel it is required of me to honor our dead and make work that speaks to this conversation around gun control...i did a series of drawings about the paris attacks and that work was much darker and on point and so much of my audience just turns away from that darkness and pain when i depict it in my work, although it is part of the world we live in...so i’m finding a curious satisfaction in using such playful, easy forms to honor the dead...at the deeper heart of that there is an obscene and grotesque quality of american culture and life that absolutely horrifies me, but the question i have asked myself is how can i use beauty to shape this conversation? especially when this work has to exist in a marketplace? .
